The alternative to MyLaps
Registration and timing in one system, self-service Barefoot Lite, live results and a local crew that supports you, not just hardware you run alone.
Recognised bodies the technology has supported

MyLaps is well-known timing hardware, but it leaves you running the system alone and doesn’t do your registration. Barefoot gives you registration and timing in one, self-service or full-service, and a local crew that supports you before, during and on race day.

Why organisers switch
Supporting 450+ events every year — from local races to events with 50,000 participants
MyLaps is a hardware brand, which means the timing is yours to run and support largely falls on you, and registration is a separate system entirely. For an organiser that’s two gaps: no local team on the day if something goes wrong, and no connection between entries and results. Barefoot is a partner rather than just a product: registration and timing on one system, self-service Barefoot Lite or a full crew, live results, and local support that knows events, so you’re not troubleshooting hardware alone at 6am on race day.

The honest comparison
Barefoot Sport vs MultiSport Australia · built only from what MSA publishes
Timing hardware and systems. Decoders, transponders, mats and Speedhive results, used across motorsport, cycling and endurance worldwide.
Registration and timing in one. Entries, payments, chip timing, live results and race-day crew.
Offered through a registration partner rather than built in-house, so entries and timing sit with two companies.
Built in, on the same system as the timing, with one team accountable for both.
In Australia and New Zealand, you do, or a timer you engage separately. Their own timing service runs from teams based in Europe.
Your choice per event. A Barefoot crew on site, or Barefoot Lite deployed by you.
Supplier support for the equipment.
A local team in your time zone, and a crew on your course if you want one.
⭐ Published pricing pages by sport and by tag, so you can budget before contacting anyone.
Quoted per event, so the number reflects your field, your course and your timing points.
⭐ Global, across motorsport and endurance.
Australia and New Zealand, owned and operated in both.
MYLAPS information as published, September 2026.
If you run a permanent venue, a weekly race series off the same start line, or a motorsport or karting programme, owning MyLaps hardware is the right answer and has been for a long time. The equipment is excellent and the per-event cost of owning it falls every time you use it. We'd rather tell you than sell you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is Barefoot different from MyLaps?
Barefoot is a partner and a full system, with registration and timing in one and local support, where MyLaps is timing hardware you run alone.
Does Barefoot include registration?
Yes. Registration and timing are one system.
Can I still run timing myself?
Yes. Barefoot Lite is self-service, or our crew can run it for you.
Is it cheaper to hire a timer or buy your own timing system?
It depends on how many events you run a year. Buying is close to a one-off cost — a decoder, antennas or mats, and then tags — so it pays back across a full calendar of events. Hiring costs you a fee every single time, which suits one or two events a year. Before buying, check whether the system reads standard tags or only ones you have to buy from the manufacturer.
How many participants do you need before chip timing is worth it?
It’s finisher density that decides this, not total entries. Manual timing breaks down when several people cross the line within the same few seconds, which happens early in a crowded 5km but rarely in a spread-out ultra. So a 300-person fun run may need chip timing while a 300-person trail ultra doesn’t. Count how many finishers you expect in your busiest ten minutes, not how many enter.
Can I time my own event without a timing crew on site?
Yes, with the right kit. Lightweight, battery-powered timing units and reusable tags are designed to be set up by the organiser or a volunteer rather than a travelling crew, and that removes the travel, flights and accommodation costs that make remote events expensive to time. Crewed timing still makes sense for very large fields, tight finishes or complex multi-discipline formats where someone needs to be watching the data live.
Can I use my existing timing tags with a different timing system?
Sometimes, and it’s the first thing to check. Active and passive timing use different technologies and can’t be mixed in one event. Among passive systems, some decoders read any standard UHF Gen 2 tag while others only read tags encoded by that manufacturer — which locks your ongoing tag spend to one supplier. Ask any provider directly whether their system reads third-party tags before you commit.
Are reusable timing tags cheaper than disposable ones?
Reusable tags cost more upfront and less over time, so the answer depends on how often you run. Disposables are cheaper per unit and need no collection, which suits one-off mass events. Reusable tags pay for themselves across repeat events and cut single-use waste, but you have to collect them, store them and replace the ones that walk off. Budget for a loss rate at every event.
