The cycling reality — what it takes to run these events

Cycling isn’t one sport, it’s several, and running each means handling its own logic: gran fondos with timed segments and grades, criteriums on tight laps, MTB in stages on remote terrain, BMX in motos and gates. On top of that the organiser is managing entries, categories, timing at speed and results. A finish-line clock built for a fun run doesn’t cover it, and stitching entries and timing across separate vendors adds admin at every step. One system that flexes to the discipline runs the whole event cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Entries, grades, timed segments and results run in one system.

Yes. Stage and moto formats are supported, with Barefoot Lite for remote MTB.

Yes. Finish reads are built to hold up at cycling speeds and in bunch finishes.

Chip timing records the moment each rider crosses a timing point, using a small RFID tag read by an antenna or loop. The tag is fixed to the helmet, fork, seat post or number plate depending on the discipline. Every crossing is stamped against that rider’s entry, so start times, splits and finish times are calculated automatically and published as results.

Most timing is quoted as a base fee for the day plus a per-rider rate, with extras for travel, additional timing points and hire of tags or number plates. The base fee covers crew, equipment and setup, so small fields carry a higher cost per rider. Course length, number of timing points and how remote the venue is move the price more than field size alone.

Yes, for many club and weekly formats. Lightweight, self-deployable timing kits let a club run its own timing with reusable tags and no crew on site, which suits weekly club rounds, cross-country and gravity enduro. Hire a crew when you have bunch finishes to separate, a large field or a championship where results get protested. Cost, not capability, is usually the deciding factor.

Yes. Enduro timing records a start and a finish at every stage, then adds each rider’s stage times to give a total. Stage timing points sit kilometres apart and often out of phone range, so the system has to store times locally and reconcile them afterwards. Reusable tags and battery-powered readers are the practical setup, since running mains power or a crew to every stage is rarely realistic.

Timing points store every read locally and sync when they reconnect, so results are not lost when there is no mobile coverage. Self-deployable readers run on battery and can be dropped at a remote checkpoint, then collected after the race. Live results and tracking will be delayed until the data reaches a connection, which is worth telling riders and spectators before race day.
